I have a '79 Evinrude 150 (150949) that I'm wanting to instal a temp gauge on. Problem is there is nowhere on the heads to screw in a sending unit. I did a forum search and found a thread showing what I believe I need, but I can't find any. Every gauge kit I find has a screw in sending unit. Anyone know where I can find the bolt on sending unit. Picture of unit below.

If there is no port in the head to screw in a threaded sender you can still use that style. You will need what is called a "Z-bracket" which, as the name implies, is a small bracket shaped like a "Z". One end is threaded so the sender screws into it. The other end has a hole in it so you can secure it to the head using one of the water cover or head bolts. You adjust the sender or bend the bracket so the tip of the sender is in sold contact with the head in an aread as close to the spark plug as practical. The net result is the sender now becomes a cylinder head temp sender just the like one you show in the picture (which happens to be picture of a sender I posted and of which I will not part with as they are hard to find. The "Z" bracket is very easy to make as well but if you are not mechanically inclined, then a bit of searching should turn it up.

Re: Temp gauge sending unit

this is what the factory shows was available for the outboards in 1979

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/O...1979/OUTBOARD WATER TEMP GAUGE KIT/parts.html

looks just like the temp sender they list for 1995 models...

uses a bracket that bolts under a suitable bolt in the head, and you ajust the sender down to make contact with the head ...

funny thin is on my model they have a threaded hole for a specific sender...but they dont list it anywhere..

trying to find senders is an impossible task...SIERRA hasa thousand....but they never list one for an OMC that i could find.

I think the one thing I heard is that certain senders dont work with all guages

because of the differences in ohms......I am not an electrical guru, but thats what i remember reading...

seemed you needed to match the ohms of the sender with the gauges..

unless you buy everything as a kit together

good luck

The Z bracket is teleflex part #IA55009. The threads are 1/8 NPT.
