Temp Guage Registering 240 (pegged out)

This engine has sat for 5 years. Just got it running this week. Temp gauge slowly pegs out at 240 as the engine runs. The manifolds are warm to the touch...not hot at all. I checked the thermostat...works just fine. No water leaks anywhere. I have muffs on it with plenty of water flow. I have not replaced the impeller yet...but thought that with muffs, since water is getting to the engine...would keep it cool....guess not. Questions..is it the impeller, the gauge, or sending unit...or combination? Or is it something else.

Thanks
1985 OMC V6, 3.8L, stringer i/o

Re: Temp Guage Registering 240 (pegged out)

I just got over my overheating issues, actually just today!

My recommendation:

1. Take off the risers and inspect.
2. With the risers off inspect the manifold ports.
3. Change the impeller. You'll never diagnose an overheat with a garden hose.

Check out the MANY overheat strings in here. These systems only have a few major variables, but my recommendation is change the impeller.

Early here too....not sure I'm up to this yet....just having 1st coffee.

checked the risers...had the manifolds off, new gaskets, etc....all looked pretty good to me for what i know which is very little about risers and manifolds. I think it must be the impeller. This boat has never been in salt water. and actually, for a 1985 does not have that many hours on it. It was bought by the previous owner in 1995, used it 3 years, Not often, then let it set. I got it free for the taking, boat and trailer. Engine runs like a new one. Interior was shot for sitting out in the weather for the last 5 years.
The first owner took really good care of it I'm told. I got it free because it was in the family.
It's a 4winns hull, horizon 190.

I would check impeller. the impeller is round and the housing is oblonged. The impeller is sitting (5 yrs) in this position. At least thats how mine works

Re: Temp Guage Registering 240 (pegged out)

Ok...I have a new impeller, was just putting off changing it. Such a pain I understand with these stringer i/o OMC. I don't have a bood and am having a hard time getting one. I have a diagram schematic of it is all. I know where it is, but not sure of the steps to change it. I've done them before but only on outboards. I underdstand this stringer unit is a trick/pain to do. The cobra is much easier.
Anyone know of a website that has the blow by blow description of how to do it? Today is Sunday, I live in a small south texas town, can't get a manual .

Do some prior searches on this forum and your bound to come up with some type of website or schematic . I have a cobra and can change impeller in about 2 minutes, but I didn't get my boat for free, so who's the lucky one here
