Temp gun to check engine temp.

I just replaced my water impeller and bought an IR temp gun to test out the temp of the engine. My question is where exactly should I aim to check temp? Where the temp buzzer wire enters the engine? Near the spark plugs? The engine is an 1988 85hp. If you could be as specific as possible I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

If it were me i'd aim it at the bottom of the head where the water leaves the head.

Where the temp sender is in the head is a good spot.J

Because it's so easy to do, I check multiple spots around the block and manifolds. Doing this can identify hot spots and will help find a coolant blockage or restriction.

Have you thought of adding a temperature gauge to the dash?

I just did mine using a gauge/sender that I purchased from eBay for < $10 delivered. It fits where the stainless screw is in the top of the head (looking down from the top) - I also used a brass T - one side for the temperature sender and the other side for 1/4" pipe that became a 'telltale' - works awesome!

Now I can see the water is flowing and see the head water temperature.
