temp of boat

I just bought this boat the guy I bought it from was the original owner it is an 1989 four winns 19 ft inboard/outboard he said the water pump needed to be replaced. we did that we put it in the water today first time it started running hot does anyone have an ideas where we need to look next? does anyone know if it has a thermostat in this boat ?

Did you change the impeller in the stern drive or the circulation pump on the block? There should be a stat in there too.

We changed the water pump it ran at the house for 30 min did not get hot at all we put it in the water and within 10 min it was warming up

Find the water hose going into the thermostat housing. See if you're getting water flow while on the hose/muffs. If you are, I would take it to the lake and try it there too. I'm not 100% sure the best way to do that on a Cobra, my Stringer was a bit different.

Overheating in 10 minutes sounds like no water getting into the system at all - which would suggest to me that the impeller was defective or installed incorrectly. The circulation pump on the engine may be the culprit, but it's not typical.

You can test the stat or change it (they're cheap enough). But I would start by seeing how much water is making through the system.
