I have a 2000 20' Pontoon boat with a 60hp mercury Bigfoot engine. I noticed the horn does not buzz when I turn the key. I traced the wire from the sensor at the motor and it is not hooked to anything it just hangs there. The horn has a purple wire coming off going to the key switch theres another wire it is brown and it has like a pigtail to it one end goes to the motor and the other end hangs in mid air. My question is where does the wire go thats hanging. Im pretty sure it does not go to ground I was told the sensor at the motor ground it's self and completes the circuit when it reaches a certain temp.

Thanks, Dave

Re: Temp overheat horn/buzzer

I suspect that is true.

I really, really recommend you buy the SELOC book for your motor and trace the wireing down and re-connect that sensor. You should also put the sensor in a pan of water on the stove with a thermometer and attach a multi-tester to the leads. Find out what temperature it goes off at. This is not a variable-resistance device; when it hits a temperature it makes a connection and your horn should sound.

This horn is very important. Two-cycle engines run VERY hot compared with four-cycles. The compression is typically very much lower [5:1 versus 4 cycle 9:1], and they tend to have powerful cooling systems. If this thing gets hot it gets ruined in a big hurry!

Good luck-
