Can someone advise me on the location of installing the temp probe. I think i understand this particular model, Evinrude, 1987 175 TLCU 6 cyl., does not allow for an actual water temp prob, so I assume there is a place for the probe on the head? I want a temp guage, but want it to be right. Any successful attempts on here? Thanks for your help.

I used a cylinder head temp kit from Faria Instruments.
It comes with the gauge and the sender/probe.

The sender is attached by removing one head bolt, putting the sender mounting tab hole over the head bolt hole, and re-installing the head bolt, torqueing as required.

Then wire it to the helm.

Thank you, but which head bolt? I think if i understand it right, the mount part for the actual probe is supposed to fit into a blank hole or something in the head?

No, the sensor just is held in tight contact with the head surface by the sensor mounting tab, and of course then held with a head bolt.

I used a head bolt next to #1 cylinder (upper cyl) on the inboard side of the head, and one that had a suitable flat spot next to it for the sensor to contact.

I actually installed two sensors, feeding one gauge, with a switch to select the port or starboard sensor.

Look for a blind tapped hole near the plugs, I have a 94 150 and there is a tapped hole in each head. I used the trim guage wiring to route the signal to the guage, just snip it near the plug.
If they didn't leave a tapped hole then there are surface mount senders.

These old crossflows don't typically have a tapped hole for a temp sender. It does not matter which head bolt you use, as long as the probe evenly contacts the surface of the head cover.

Thank you very much for all the help. Hey Daselbee, I like that 2 sensor to one guage idea, I think I am going to do that too, Makes sense to be able to see from one side and the other for troubleshooting purposes. Thanks again, Dan
