Long story short I proved this is the issue to my temp gauge not working. I have the 1988 3.7l mercruiser, how do empty the coolant without making a huge mess? What’s the procedure to replace the temp sender?

place a container under the area ,try removing the hose and catching most of it. , then remove the sender or
Remove the sender and catch what you can in a container

you make a mess, you then clean the mess.

however if you have the replacement temp sender ready, unscrew the old, quickly screw in the new, the mess will be minimized.

now on to the question, you did troubleshoot the sender is bad, correct?

Yes but it seemed to be working today. Never registered with muffs but today in the lake it went to the line between 120 and 180. Not sure what it is as it was not labeled (150/160?). It never left green/blue.
