Alarm at WOT is usually fuel restriction.
Might be a seperate issue from the sand in the 'stats.

This mtr doesn't have an alarm on it for a fuel restriction. Your best bet would be go to Harbor freight and buy a temp gun to see if it's actually over heating when the alarm goes off. Another thing to try is when the alarm is going off disconnect the tan wires going to the cyl heads and see if the alarm shuts off. I have an old saying, when ever you suspect an over heat prob " Go for the throat ". Meaning, check the water pump first. Seeing you had sand in the thermos you could have a bad pump or blockage in the block.

If there is sand in the thermostat housing, it may be elsewhere in the engine. I'd pull the head covers off and see if they are also filled with sand. If you find sand there, pull the heads and check the water passages aroung the cylinder liners and check your water diverters. You may need to pull the inspection cover off the top of the block and look for sand down inside between the cylinder banks. Sand will also abrade/damage the rubber impeller, so you may want to follow boobie's advice.

I have the same problem with my 1982 Evinrude 150. I have no idea where to start, I just put a new water pump in it.... could it be a prop that is making too many RPM's at top end???

Ironsides, please post a model # so we know if it's a cross flow mtr or 60 degree design. If it's a 60 degree you don't have water deflectors in the block. By the way. I live in Bonita Springs.

If you have a 99 it's a looper. I missed the year. My comments apply to an older crossflow model.

If you haven't replaced the impeller for a long while. Its probably not keeping up at that speed I had the same problem with a Yahama.

When I used to work on engines in your part of the country I had a 85hp that would do almost the same thing. It turned out that a head gasket was on the verge of blowing, it would allow compression into the cooling sysyem when it warmed up. Replaced the head and all was good again.
