Temperature gauge for my outboard

I have very limited dash space on my boat but I'd like to have a tach, fuel, volt, and trim gauges. I found a sweet multi-function gauge that has fuel, volts, trim, and temp. Can I use this gauge along with some sort of temp sender with my outboard? If so, what sender would work?

I'm thinking this temo gauge may be for engine water temp not head temp like most outboard ones are so maybe it won't work. It shows 100-240 degrees.

Re: Temperature gauge for my outboard

Cylinder head temp and water temperature will end up being the same thing. The sender you need is either of two types. The screw in type can be installed into any threaded port that enters the water jacket OR using a "Z" bracket, it can be installed so the sender touches the cylinder head near the hottest cylinder which is normally the top one. The other type of sender is not a screw in style but bolts under a head bolt like the "Z" bracket but it has its own bracket. These senders are about the diameter of a nickel. Either sender must have a resistance range of 33 - 240 ohms (hot-cold respectively). Teleflex should have the sender since they make temperature gauges.

Thanks. I just searched for a bit and couldn't find any leads as to where I could purchase what I need: bracket and sender. Ideas?

Re: Temperature gauge for my outboard

While I appreciate the info, I could, of course do without the condescension. I was able to find some senders but most were marked for I/O's or other brands of outboard and I had no idea if they would work. Apparently it doesn't matter. Don't even get me started on the level of frustration searching for anything on iboats store causes.

For everyone else's benefit, Bob_VT hooked me up with a Teleflex FAQ which had some specific part numbers:

What engine temperature gauge do I use on my outboard?

Teleflex has replaced all of its 50-200 degree O/B temperature kits with a more generic kit that can be used on all outboards having a 12-volt battery. These new kits cover a temperature range of 80-220 degrees. The gauge reads C to H with graduated marks in between for reference. The kit comes complete with gauge, proper sender, brackets, and instruction sheet that adapt it to almost any outboard engine.
For replacement parts, sender IA96035 must be used with a 50-200 degree gauge. Sender 52320S010 must be used with a C-H gauge. If an IA96035 sender is used with a C-H gauge, the gauge will read at the 200-degree area very quickly.
The 120-240 degree stern drive temperature gauge can be used but it will register temperatures in the low temperature area (on most engines) when engine operates normally. Sender 52320S010 must be used. If sender requires a bracket for installation, use bracket IA55009.

I found the sender on MarineEngine.com and ordered it. They did not have the bracket. I found the bracket on Overton's. Overton's also had an "outboard temp sender" that looked like the same thing I had already ordered but wasn't listed with a Teleflex part number.

Here's the awesome gauge I got:

Here's the sender on MarineEngine:

This one from iboats is the same:

The bracket on Overton's:

The sender Overton's has:

I'll update this thread when I get this stuff and install it and let everyone know how it works.
