I have an Evinrude 1988, 88hp, SPL, like new. To see the engine goto nex link and hit "Engine" pic.

I bought this temp gauge in ebay and came w/o any instructions. I have no idea how to install this.

or tell me where I can find help.
The numers on the top are100 - 175 - 250, at the bottom: 60 - 80 - 120, I don't even know if this is relevant.

Re: Temperature gauge installation

Of the three screw-on terminals, one is for ground, one for 12V from the ignition switch and one is for the lead from the sensor. On mine (which is a Faria) there are markings on the back of the gauge, under the plastic retainer (I for ignition, GND for ground and S for sensor).

Again, on mine (which may be different from yours), looking at the back of the gauge, the right screw is "I", the middle is "GND" and the left is "S."

I should add, don't try hooking up wires just to see if some combo will work. If you inadvertently hook up the 12 V supply to the sensor terminal you can ruin the gauge (at least that's what it says in my documentation).

Also, if it is a Faria, you can go on-line and get a pdf of the documentation.

Re: Temperature gauge installation

You do need a temperature SENDER compatable with the gauge. You cannot use the temperature SWITCH currently on the engine which triggers the audible alarm. There are two types of senders available, both of which are shown below. The numbers at the top of the gauge scale are degrees "F" while the numbers at the bottom of the scale are degrees "C" (metric).

The sender below screws into a port that is open to the water jacket. A "Z" bracket is also available for this sender that allows it to function as a cylinder head temperature gauge by bolting it to the cylinder head.

This is also a cylinder head temperature gauge with it's own bracket. It too bolts to a cylinder head bolt so the sender contacts the head. The screw in type is preferred but both have the same resistance value and properly installed they both work fine.

Re: Temperature gauge installation

Your engine does not have a hole for the new temp sender. You will have to adapt the bolt-on sender type that Silvertip suggests, above, or a type that uses a "Z" bracket on the surface of the head. Should work fine. The gauge should require 3 leads, the ground, the signal wire for the sender gauge and a wire for the light inside the gauge. It is very important that the gauge match the sender, as many type are available on the market. If they don't match you won't get a correct reading.

Re: Temperature gauge installation

You need FOUR wires on the gauge. 1) ground, 2) +12 volts with the key on, 3) sender and 4) the internal light. The light connection is the spade terminal just to the left of the black, internal lamp holder.

Where can I find a z bracket and sender or one of those that attach to a head bolt?

Do those that attach to a head bolt interfere with the torque at all?

I'm trying to piece together a gauge to help prevent another overheating problem.

Thanks!

So does that one attach to a head bolt and rest against the head?

Yes -- that's what the "Z" bracket is for. Mount it so the sender contacts the head closer to the spark plug rather than to the side of the engine. Install it on the cylinder that tends to be the hottest which is typically the uppermost cylinder.

It attaches to head COVER bolt. Less critical than head bolts as far as your torque question goes. Just don't break it off!

Re: Temperature gauge installation

My motors have both a port to water, and a port throught the cover to the head. Is there an advantage to one type of sensor over the other?

Re: Temperature gauge installation

No! But a sender that screws into a port is simply a more secure setup and less prone to loosening.
