Tempermental Mercury

Have a 40 HP 1994 Mercury --- Whenever I try to start --it will either start properly or nothing at all -- I have replaced the ingnition switch thinking that I had a problem in the switch -- problem still persists -- where should I look next. Appreciate your assistance with this one.

starter solenoid is suspect will it start every time if you jump the solenoid? Low battery or loose connections or terminals will slao cause this check all the wires and batt terminals carefully
