I would like to add a temperture gauge to my '85 xr4. Question is how beneficial would this be and how would I wire the gauge to the motor?

Of course adding a temp gauge is beneficial. But only if you monitor it and understand what it is telling you. You need two things -- the gauge and the proper sender. The sender installs in an unused port in the water jacket or water cover, the the gauge itself iinstalls in the console. A single wire runs from the sender to the "S" terminal on the gauge. The "I" (ignition) terminal on the gauge connects to the "I" terminal on any other gauge or to any source of +12 volts when the key is on. The ground terminal on the gauge connects to ground buss or to the ground terminal on any other gauge. Same for the light terminal. Here is a typical temp sender installation on a 75 Merc.

I would rather see a water pressure guage installed as most temp guages are inaccurate, that why its a C and a H and nothing in between...

The water pressure gauge is the most beneficial information. The XR4 has a temp sending unit for the Mercury or compatible gauge when it comes out of the crate. It's a tan wire, and should show up under the dash in the harness.

hope it helps
