I would like to install a hidden security switch on my OB to give me some piece of mind while away from the boat hunting. I take other precautions (and tricks) but hate getting fuel on my hands prior to hunting. Would I need to ground out both cylinders, or ground the coild itself? Has anyone else done this? Would it just be easier to pull the cover and disconnect the plug wires, or are thieves smarter than that now? Thanks.

Welcome to Iboat's

Does your motor have a safety lanyard? If it does, pulling that, and walking away with it would make stealing the boat/motor a PITA for any would be theives who don't happen to have a spare lanyard with them.

Hiding a switch that grounds the ignition system (like a stop button would) may also be effective.

But....
Ultimately, if they really want it, they will figure out a way to take it. Insure it if you're really worried about loosing it.

You can wire a toggle switch some where and ground out the switchbox the same way a man overboard switch dose. Just run a ground wire from the motor block to the one side of the switch, and another wire to the same terminal as the black wire with yellow tracer is on the switchbox. If the motor has a man overboard switch already and is a tiller you can take the coil cord an clip off and wirh you hunting.
One can do everything to lessen thivery ,but if they want it bad enought they will get it no matter what you do. Insureance is good and dose not cost that much. Otherwise a long chain around a tree with a padlock and locked to the bow eye of the boat would work.JMO

Really appreciate the quick response here. This site is not all that bad...
The motor is an older tiller style with a simple flip kill switch and a pull-out style dead man ring- so it stays with the motor.
Yes, it is insured, but the thought of being stranded is what drives me to add security to it. The sandbars I stop on are generally too big for a chain and lock. I am usually within ear shot of it but would hate to punch a hole in her side trying to disable the meth-head with an arrow. I'll look at diagram for the proper wires to tie into. Might also look at hiding a second anchor off the transom to slow them down.
Thanks again!
