I was running my outboard the other day on the muffs, and telltale was extremely hot, so was the thermostat housing, the water never cooled off, but just before I turned the engine off, the talltale stoped spraying water and just begain to blow steam, Did that mean the thermostat just opened?

So bought a infrared thermometer, and wanna check the temp levels.
What temp does the thermostat open?
what temp does it close again?
What temp does the overheat alarm sound?

Do I take these temp readings from the thermostat housing?

Re: Temps

Naw the thermo opening or closing would just make the flow stronger or weaker, should not stop alltogether.

My 1977 55HP thermo opens at approx 145 F.

The warning horn goes off (Closes / grounds out) at 211 F.
And will stop when the temp goes down to 175 F.

You can take temps anywhere to troubleshoot. But yeah the thermostat area , water jacket and cylinder head is were you want to focus. You can even capture water in a cup from the telltale (when it pissing) and quickly take a temp reading with your IR gun.

Like you said it the other post you already did the cylinder head gasket. Mabey the overheating it was doing when the cylinderhead gasket was bad it put stress on the other gaskets.

Exhaust manifold (2)
Powerhead and adapter plate
Did you do the waterjaket gasket too when you had the cylinderhead off?

Exhaust is getting into the water system somewhere.

Re: Temps

Might not have had enough water running into the lower unit. I experienced the same problem once and Joe told me to make sure I had a good seal on my muffs and to make sure I turned the water all the way on at the hose and I had great flow. Went out, tried it and have never had the problem again.

It is always best to run them in a barrel of water so you have the back pressure. Muffs seem to force water instead of letting the pump do it

That was last year, this just happened again yesterday I hope its not the gasket again.

just fired it up gain today, and no water at all this time :(

I had never noticed so much water spraying out of the lower unit before, water was spraying 2 feet out of a small notch, in the back of the lower unit, maybe the hose was to much pressure and blew the water tube off or something. (of course i dont run much on the hose, so this may be normal and just havnt noticed it before)
