This is not a rant about the 30% increase for boat registration in TN. At $10 or $13 per year I still feel I'm getting one helluva bargain. I'm not complaining.

What I would like to know is why Nashville sent me two sets of hull registration stickers and two wallet-size reg. cards when I applied for registration for one boat. Has this happened to anyone else? Is this common practice now?

The only thing I see myself gaining from this (oversight?) is not having to pay a $5 duplicate fee if my stickers/card got disfigured or lost.
Maybe I should go to the bait shop where I re-upped my registration to make sure they didn't forget to carry the one?

Sounds like a simple boo-boo. You should just get one set of stickers and one card. Put the extras up in case your first set gets lost or damaged.

I pay Reg on 2 boats in TN and you won't hear me complain about the fees either. I was on the lake Saturday and the TWRA patrols came in for a bite to eat at the restaurant. 3 boats, 6 Officers, and I'm betting someone was still on patrol. Saw them step away from lunch to politely stop someone who had had a couple too many and was casting off from the dock. They didn't arrest him that I saw, but let them go their way after someone else in the boat agreed to take the wheel.

Very rarely do I go to the lake that I don't see them on patrol. Occasionally they do safety checks, but they are always courteous and quick. If the increase in fees and these checks are the price for getting drunks and unsafe folks off the water, we're in good shape.

Re: Tennessee boat registration

Boat registration fees in TN are more than fair.

I hear rumors there is someone of authority (TWRA or TN State Police) hanging around marinas and ramps writing citations for improper boat registration numbers. Seems the numbers need to be within two inches of the rubrail or you get a ticket (if below the rubrail the top of the numbers must be two inches or less below the rubrail: if above the rubrail the bottom of the numbers must be two inches or less above the rubrail: pontoons - who knows). I also hear fines exceed $100.

Is this just an "urban (or lake) legend"?

I can't find any such regulation on TWRA's Website or the boating safety handbook.
