hi guys , i have a 1986 johnson 140 horsepower motor . what i need to know is if there is a bolt somewhere on the motor to tighten it up some . if i let go of the steering wheel the motor will go all the way to the right . this happens even if i am barely moving . i have ajusted the trim tab but that doesnot seem to work either . thanks ..

Re: tension bolt for motor ?

Don't know if your engine has power trim and tilt or not,but there is a trim point at which the steering will attain a neutral pull as long as the trim tab is adjusted correctly. An engine without power trim/tilt has a transom bracket rod that can be adjusted to the most suitable hole. Not to question your tab adjustment but you didn't mention which way you moved it so I'll ask.......did you make sure and adjust it where the trailing end of the tab is moved toward the side that the boat pulls to?

No tension adjustment that I am aware of,but the fact that it will move freely is a good sign that the teleflex cable and the tilt tube is in non-corroded condition.Later model OMC including my 96' incorporate a 'no feedback' steering gear box for that very reason.

funny you mention a pulling to the right problem ,, i was just about to ask the same thing about my 86 evinrude 60hp outboard it had power tilt and trim and it always pulls to the right i tinkered around with mine a little still pulls to thr right i did notice that when i get the boat planned out and trim it out just a little bit extra it will drive striaght as an arrow. not sure if we are haveing the exact same issues but they sound pretty similar. i had a guy tell me he thought it was the fin on the very bottom of my lower unit he said it had a slight bend to one side that i hadnt even noticed. he said he was pretty conveinced that would be what was making the motor not want to stay going striaght. might want to look into that maybe. i havent been able to get out and work on mine but i will let you know if anything changes with this mysteries pulling to the right problem of mine..

Excessive pulling to one side can also be amplified by a motor that is mounted too low on transom, one that is not mounted evenly(port to starboard),or as you mention above(one that has a bent skeg).
