Terminology Clarification (I/O vs Inboard vs Outboard)

I have been reading posts and the term I/O is used, I am unclear as to what that really means. How does it differ from an inboard?

Nice illustration Reel Poor. Something that is often overlooked is that the true inboard (also V-drives) needs a rudder for steering. Where an I/O uses vectored thrust (steers with the prop). A difference many operators will feel.<br /><br />Kelly
