Does anybody have any great ideas how to make a test tank or flusher for my 1963 Gale that does NOT have side intake? I would like to keep it on the boat but that looks like it would take a pretty deep tank. Any ideas or homebuilt tanks?

Re: test barrel

Hi,
I've used 1/2 of a 55gal barrel, a rubber maid large rectangle shaped garbage can, and a plastic
55 gal can. Take the prop off. One time at a guys house I use a roll of duct tape to tape a garden hose to the water intake for a short run, messy
but it got the job done. Had to turn the water on full bore to get enough flow through the screen and it sprayed everyone down good before we were done. The cans work the best. Make shure you get the water pump under the water in the tank.

Ask around and find the guy/person in your town who recycles barrels. A used 55 gallon plastic barrel is ideal for what you describe. I paid about $5 for mine and cut the top out with a saber saw...took about 5 minutes. I can run any smaller motor in it and it would fit my Merc 500 if I took the doelfin off the cav plate first. Oh yeah, if you make your own barrel/tank, drill a drain hole at the bottom and use the livewell plugs as a stopper. You can get boat and livewell plugs at Wallyworld and Stuffmart.

I use a rubbermaid plasic garbage can - think it's 30-40 gallon size. Trim the motor up enough to slide the can up around the foot then trim back down and fill with water. I usually siphon the water out when done.

I used a 55 gallone steel drum to start my 75hp. Worked fine. The plastic would of been to flimsy.

Re: test barrel

All these ideas will work great. i have used mostly garbage cans, etc.
ALso, if you just want to test your motor, I have simply dropped my boat into the water while still on the trailer and fired her up to check it w/o having to launch the boat, etc.
Good luck

Re: test barrel

What kind of flusher attachments are there for my old outboard that has intake on the front, rather than on the sides?

Re: test barrel

I went to a local farm auction and bought a livestock water tank, thay are oval so you have room to test it in gear, and they are cheap, you can leave motor on boat and slide it underneath between transom and motor. Smaller engines will even bolt right onto it. It takes 10 minutes ow water hose to fill and I put a larger drain hone (2") with cap to empty faster.
