Re: test Disc Brake

Are they surge brakes or eletric. If electric, just apply the toggle on the brake controller. If surge, try backing up without inserting the lockout pin...

Re: test Disc Brake

If backing downhill they may not apply, back uphill, put something behind the wheel to cause resistance, or just hit the gas quick so you get a slight lunge in reverse to push the tounge back on surge brakes.

Re: test Disc Brake

Most surge brakes have a lockout pin that you insert into a hole on the trailer tounge that keeps the tounge from pressing back into the surge brake actuator to allow you to backup without applying the brakes.

Try backing up the trailer, if you have dificulty backing up, flat surface or uphill, then your surge brakes are working, but you will need the lockout pin to be able to maneauver in reverse for any distance when needed...

Re: test Disc Brake

is this true for all trailers:

"If the pin is left in the neck of the trailer, the surge brake will be disabled. The pin must be removed when the vehicle is ready to travel." ????

Re: test Disc Brake

The pin needs to be removed so the brakes will work, the tounge slides within itself to operate the master cylinder, the pin prevents the slide, also if you have surge disc brakes with a 5 wire plug there may be a lockout solenoid to keep the brakes from applying, the 5th wire would hook to the backup lights to operate the solenoid. The brakes will not work with the pin in place.

Re: test Disc Brake

One of the pins in your 7 way plug says reverse or back up. the wire goes there. If yours doesnt have it for some reason then you can wire it to a toggle switch and operate it when needed, just done forget it.
In fact forget i mentioned that last part.

ohhh i need to buy this one then: http://www.overtons.com/modperl/pro...e=Trailer-Lights&aID=603C&merchID=1009&r=view

the one that i have only has 3 holes

so after i connect that to my reverse light how do i test if the brakes are working??

Just disconnect the connection betwen the truck and trailer and try to back up. You will be able to tell.

Jack up the wheels one at a time and spin them while someone pulls on the break away lever on the top of the surge unit. If the wheel stops turning, your brakes are working.

Depending on the surge unit, you may have to unbolt a piece that locks the lever in the pulled position. This piece holds the lever in case of a break away condition. You obviously want it to return to the normal position.

Its next to the brake fluid reservoir. It has the break away chain on it.

filled the reservoir since it was empty and pulled this while spinning the wheel and no go :(

Also removed the hose from the caliper from both wheels and is not spiting any fluid..

Was there any fluid in the res? If not, then you may need to bleed the brakes to get the air out of the system.

If you have that reverse backup system that wires to you backup lights, then unplugging the lights should disengage that switch and allow the brakes to engage while backing up.

If there is air in the lines, they will not engage until the lines are purges of air and the system primed up...

there was no fluid in the res. i did put liquid on it now.. How do i bleed it? i know in a car you just keep pushing the brakes with the brake fluid valve open, but in a trailer..??
