87 4.3 ser # ob825796 205 hp 262cid thunderbolt iv 4bbl . tested hall effect per. boatfix.com. iget 12 volts but when i break the field with cardboard or afeeler gauge i still read 12 volts.shot? oram i doing something wrong. also mygear on the dist. looks like its worn tothe point where it is real sharp and ready to start to break teeth. iwill be buying a new gear.

Have no clue what test you performed. Was this on the ignition sensor?

Lets look at your distributor first, while the gear may be worn, I would have to ask WHY. I would bet the bushings in the distributor are worn out. Pull the distributor and move the shaft back and forth. In one spot I bet you find there is a lot of movement. This would wear the gear, and allow the sensor wheel to contact the sensor (and kill it). You may need a new distributor, not just a gear. And what do you think the gear on the cam looks like?

hey don. the new long block hasnt arrived yet.im going through all components to install in new eng.i bought the boat with a busted block from not winterizing it right. gota deal!lookin at dist. it was a little rusty under cap. i connected 12v to ign. sensor then measured output volts.itwas 12.then i inserted feeeler gauge between magnet and sensor. shouldnt the voltage vary from zero and 12 volts.

That's not how you test it, and you probably fried the sensor. It doesn't hook directly to a 12V source and ground. It connects to the ignition thru the ignition amplifier.
Can you say Mercruiser service manual?
