I feel pretty dumb for asking this...could I run a pair of 1986 crusader 270 (350) inboards with V drives for even a few seconds out of water to make sure they run? And what about test shifting? Boat is on blocks in a heated warehouse and there is no way to get water to it. I know on mercruisers you'll cook impellers and exhaust bellows in no time, but this will be my first inboard boat and I don't understand the cooling system fully yet. I'm not buying this thing without hearing it run.

You have to have water, or you will burn up the impellers. Take the belts off the raw water pump to fire the engine. Don't run it more than a few seconds. Don't mess with the shifting dry either.
