Use muffs on lower unit water intake.

If it is an OMC electric shift, the intake hole is on the underside of the cavitation plate. If it is an older OMC electric shift, the intake is inside the exhaust relief above the prop so far as I know.

as far as i am aware of there should be 4 little holes about 1/4 or 3/8 something close on each side. they will be be next to the prop shaft, i do not know of any compleatly closed cooling systems in a boat would probably be a bad idea any how since you'd need to cool it off some how [car has a radiator, boat would have?]

Re: Testing engine in drive way

thanks to all you guys the reason i thought there might be a heat exchanger was two coolant hoses go to the big unit between the engine and the outdrive i looked again last nite there is no tiny holes like my old merc 85 to put a muff there is however aas gmc2003 said pretty big holes in the prop area i guess its time for a decent repair manual also i have a good hei distributor can i replace the old points unit with it thanks motodinosaur

There will be no muffs that will fit your drive. You can either use the adapter that goes at the trunion or put in a flush fitting in the engine compartment.

No......and I have a flusher for mine, I can take a picture if you like. It's not like the ones that clamp on for the side intakes though. You can get them at academy I believe. Give me a minute here and I'll try to upload a picture.

There is water hitting the water pump coming from the engine side. There is enough there to keep it lubricated which is all it needs.

Re: Testing engine in drive way

Sorry about above, with the kit bruceb58 shows, water goes to the impeller too I believe. Don't know about the other one. Here are the pictures of mine, hope it works.....
P.S. Don't try to engage in forward or reverse with the flusher on there and the engine running, your hose just may be sliced. :D

@GMC2003 -

TY so much for your answer w/ pics! I have an older OMC and I have been banging my head against a wall trying to figure out how yo make it work. The person I bought mine from had a home fab piece that has since fallen apart. I know just the piece to get now. I just saw it at the marine store yesterday. :D

Thanks again!

Re: Testing engine in drive way

One more thing, don't forget to run the engine with the drive in the down position, or you will destroy your ball gears in a hurry, glad I could help.
