Testing Exhaust Manifold

My IL6 Mercruiser 165 is running hot (~185). I am suspecting a restricted exhaust manifold because both water pumps, thermostat and riser are new.
How can I check to see if it is clogged? I was going to connect a garden hose to the input and see if it ran clear but a friend said he didn't recommend this because w/o the engine running the water might not get passed the flapper and go back into the cylinders! I am trying to verify the manifold w/o removing it. :)

Since you narrowed it down to the manifold, I would remove it for inspection of rot or rust.
And while its off, replace it. Shouldn't been more than 6 bolts

just my 2 cents.
lou

Replacing it is easy........it's the cost, ~$500!
It didn't seem rotted/rusted when I put it on but it might be clogged.

Tony,
Pull the riser off the manifold.... Then you'll be able to see into the water jacket... That's the most common Clog Spot....
