1986 Merc. 175
I've done a search on this topic and have found some information...

My question is, does anyone have a detailed process for testing the stator/switchboxes?
I'm aware of needing a peak reading DC voltmeter.

I believe the readings should be such:
Blue wires to switch boxes..200+ volts....red wires...anything over 20 volts...output to coils...180 minimum....these tests done at cranking speed using a peak reading DC voltmeter....regular dc meter will get cooked.
(this from a previous post)

Does cranking speed mean while the engine is at idle only?
My reason behind testing is I believe I have week spark on 1,3,5 cylinders... Engine will not idle and runs horribly.

The manual specifies Ohm tests too. Easier.

-W

Re: Testing Stator and Switch boxes...

Let's say when I check the stator (ohm test).

My question now is, Would a bad low speed winding only, indicate a failed ohm test. Or do both windings have to be bad for it to fail?

Ohming out the stator as per the manual will insure both windings are good. (or not).

-W

Both the low speed and the high speed stator ohm readings have to be correct.Either reading incorrect will give operating problems.(insufficient spark).
DHP

Should I check for just continuity, or a particular ohm reading (I don't have my manual with me right now). What ohm readings should I see, if you know them...

KCLOST,Sorry,I don't even try to remember those specs. You need the manual,or at least the guide book that comes with Merc's Peak Volt Meter. For some stator readings you may have to know the color or even the thickness of the stator, but I think that's for other tests.
DHP

I have a very good Fluke 112 True RMS Multimeter... Will this work? It has Max./Min./Avg. voltage settings built in. When using Max. is this the same as using a peak reading DC voltmeter...It will handle up to 600V.

It will display and hold on the screen the max. reading measured while on this setting...
Is that basically what I'm looking for.

KCLOST,I don't see why it won't work,I'm just not familiar with Fluke,as I don't own one.DHP

Re: Testing Stator and Switch boxes...

Well, I did the ohm tests on the stator leads today.

My seloc manual states...
Between blue and red stator wires = 4.5-6.2 x1000
Blue/White and Red/White = 5.4-6.2 x1000
Red to Ground = 125-175 x1
Red/White to Ground = 125-175 x1

I got, in the same order... = 31.35 x1000
= 3.92 x1000
= 67.7 x1
= 69 x1

So it looks like I have a bad stator,,,unless I have a completely different stator on my motor...The trigger ohm tests came out normal...
Any input would be appreciated.
If I go ahead and replace the stator only, is this going to require that I time and syncronize the engine after replacement?

Originally posted by KCLOST:
I got, in the same order...

= 31.35 x1000
= 3.92 x1000
= 67.7 x1
= 69 x1

Is that 3.92 a typo for 39.2 ?

-W

Re: Testing Stator and Switch boxes...

Nope, 3.92 k ohms, that's for red/white to blue/white

Blue to Red was 31.35 k ohms....

Or 3920 and 31350 ohms respectively....

Any chance I may have a good stator that may be different from what the manual specs out? I checked the readings 4 times over so I'm sure of what I posted earlier...
What concers me is, that none of my readings fell into the normal ranges. I'd expect possibly one of the windings to be bad but not the whole thing.....Kind of makes me wonder.....

Thanks for any help..
