testing the solenoid

testing a solenoid on a 120 hp force 1997 motor ,should i have 12 volts at the lead that goes back to the switch when the key is on to the start position.or let me know how to test the solenoid

Crossjcg,I assume you are speaking of the starter solenoid.If so you can perform a simple jumper test by jumping leads or by connecting hand held remote starter leads between the large 12v cable on solenoid to the small 12v ignition terminal on solenoid.Leave the ignition switch off so motor doesn't fire and be careful around flywheel.If motor turns over your problem is likely in the starter switch or wiring from switch to solenoid.Insure all of your large 12 v cables are clean and tight.Battery posts,engine grounds , and both sides of solenoid.System voltage will drop to around 9 1/2 to 10 volts while cranking.

To add to what OB said, also check with a Voltmeter to see if you have 12V to the switched side of the selonoid when the key is turned. That will tell you if you are getting anything from the key to the selonoid.
