Don't work on too many VRO Johnsons
1998 200
Carbed engine.
Good comp120#
Good spark.
Started getting harder and harder to start.
Then wouldn't start.Changed plugs.
Started and burned off the buildup.
Still seems to foul out the plugs too fast?
How do you test the VRO??

Thanks,Jerry

Re: Testing VRO Pump.

That VRO Pump (Actually called Oil Metering System) should run about 60::1. If here is an air leak in the gasoline side of the motor, it will pump more oil.

I would be surprized if the OMS system is causing your issue, as the motor will run quite well on 24::1 or even 16::1. Have you checked your carbs for flooding?

No check on flooding.
Will look deeper tomorrow.
The owner does a LOT of slow running.
Was a blow boater and bought a powerboat.
Thinks going everywhere at 4 mph is the bomb!!!

Re: Testing VRO Pump.

A quick test to check the diaphragms is to put a vacuum and a pressure pump on the pulse fitting on the VRO.

Put the pump (either) on the pulse fitting on the VRO. Pump it to 15 psi or 15 hg and then put your finger over the fuel outlet fitting. Quickly remove the hose of the pump from the pulse fitting. Then after a few seconds, remove your finger from the outlet fitting. If you hear a "click" and feel it, then that diaphragm is okay. If both are okay, then it should pump oil and fuel. A quick check of the oiling is easily done. Get a graded clear hose (graded in 1/2" incriments) fill it with oil. Start the engine and run it at 1500 rpm, in gear. Keep a hand on the VRO and feel for the "click" of the pump. It should "click" 3 to 6 times for dispensing 3" of oil. You can watch it and see the oil being sucked into the pump as the VRO 'clicks". Hope this helps.

Hello

Go to Oriely's or auto zone and borrow their radiator cap test kit, remove the cap adapter from the pump and hose and get a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter and some 3/8 hose to allow hookup to the puls hose adapter on the pump follow attached troubleshooting procedure.VRO Pump Test.jpg
