New to site. First post, but been lurking and learning for a while. A little background:
Have an ugly '79 Renken with a '85 Yam 150 ETXK. Not a pretty sight, but utilitarian. Worked in 2007 when I bought it. Sat for 2 years during boat work...floor paint, new fuel tank, new(used) trailer etc. All the work done by my bro-in-law and yours truly(nothing too complicated, mostly cosmetic). Finally got her on the water..wouldn't shift out of fwd...motor would crank, and run like a top...straight at my brother's truck...fiddled with it at the lake. Cussed a bunch, drank a bunch, came home MAD.

We both got online. We found what was wrong at the lake (shift bracket busted in two), but needed to see how much it would cost to have it fixed. I described the job to my mechanic (he's awesome and trustworthy btw), and he said it would be at least 5-6 hrs of labor @ $85/hr, IF there weren't any frozen bolts.

I couldn't afford that, so I turned back to this forumn. Believe it or not, just from reading what we found on this site, my bro and I were able to take the PH off (with a bit of help from my mechanic), switch out the shift shaft (bent to hell) and the bracket, and seal the whole shebang back up. I AM NOT mechanical! There's just so much good info on here, and you all are so helpful that we were able to do this. THANK YOU!!!!! Cannot thank everyone enough!

BTW: We had two broken bolts...drilled one out(Thanks RODBOLT), ground the other one down level...runnin' on 5 long, 4 short and 2 studs. While doing the project found that the tell-tale was about clogged, so switched out the tube and nipple too. All done for less than $400 including parts ($170 went to my mechanic to pry the PH off and grind down the broken bolt). My mechanic said I probably saved about $600-$900 doing it myself.

AWESOME site guys!
