I recently had a issue with my brothers boat engine A Mericruiser 3.0LX

After many attempts by his mechanic (3 Blown Head gaskets Later)

He was ready to trash this boat I stepped in and THANKS TO THIS FORUM

I have managed to resurrect her from the scrap heap still have to pull her back apart but i have recieved enough info from you all to get this boat back into shape and seaworthy

just wanted to say thanks nobody around here (Local Marinas repair facility) I guess when you buy a boat they hold the machanical stuff sacred I couldnt even Get the head torque

I will post pics if anybody is interested :) :) :)

Check for a warped head and a crack in the block from a cylinder out or between cylinders. Boring it 3L instead of 2.5L makes it kinda thin in places and they can crack. Set timing 4 degrees after spec. If it says 6 btdc, set it at 2. If it says 4 btdc, set it at tdc.

No my brother has nearly ruined the engine of a 3.0 Litre LX Mercruiser

i got it after his so called mechanic repaired the head

he was supposed to put new valves in he did he used the wrong valves
Cupped them out he pulled the head again put in the right valves ran great brother left the boat on the water rained like heck the next day all but sunk the boat he bucketed the water until the carb was out of the water believe or not it crank ran crappy but it crank he drove it 1/2 mile to the landing
and by then the head gasket blew ruined the starter alternator ignition module

well he replaced all that got it running took it to the lake 1hr later popped head gasket again he repeated this step twice and he paid the mechanic each time

well he gave up parked the boat at the garage and there she sat for the better part of a year then he decided to get rid of i mean he was gonna scrap her

I got it from him for $800 the stainless trailer i feel is worth more than that

pulled the head had it checked it was warped imagine that the previous mech never had it checked

put it back together took it to the lake had valve issues VERY LOUD anyway
i made 1 post and you guys came to my rescue i now have a complete manual on this girl and things are coming together very nice will be getting her back to the water this weekend now that i know how to adjust the valves correctly

Thanks again everybody
