I have read the top secret file. I have done everything suggested in that file. I have damaged two harmonic balancers and have now bought a flywheel puller. As I type this, my 1989 Evinrude V4 120 hp sits with a flywheel puller attached under all the pressure I can muster with both two different pneumatic impact wrenches and a power handle. I have rapped the end of the puller bolt with a 4lb hammer repeatedly, I have intermittently repeated the impact wrench for up to full minute bursts, I have put all my strength into a power handle pushing with both hands while standing with my back against the basement wall, it has been sitting under pressure for two days with a puddle of PB Blaster filling the impression in the flywheel for the nut, but that flywheel will not budge. I have been affraid that I would break the power handle or puller bolts, or pull the threads out of the flywheel. Does anyone have any more suggestions?

Re: The dreaded flywheel.

Apply heat to the fly wheel, you may ruin it but if its got to go, get another. try Kroil the best penetrating oil ever. OR Buy a junk motor and move your good parts over and throw the old one away after you strip it.

have you tried using a rubber mallet smartly on the flywheel yet? just bang it slightly around the flywheel, that did the trick on the third day for me

If you're married........just have your wife nag the flywheel til it finally gives up.

Re: The dreaded flywheel.

Try mixing some ATF & Acetone 50:50 and putting it on the taper part. And then have PATIENCE!! Somebody may have torqued the flywheel nut down with an impact gun. If you use heat you may screw up the center magnets in the flywheel.

That has got to be the funniest/truest comment ever!

"why u got that ol greasy thing, get rid of it"
"its taking up the whole garage"
"wish u spent as much time with us as that motor"

PING-as the flywheel gives up.

Well, I know ATF either as alcohol, tobacco and firearms, or automatic transmission fluid. I'm sure its' not the former, but I'm not sure about the later. Are you suggesting automatic transmission fluid or am I totally missing something?

Keep the pressure on it and PATIENCE,

Whack the puller nut and tighten.

PATIENCE.

Whack and tighten.

Make sure that you have the flywheel nut on the end of the crank, several threads down. If the thing decides to let go when you are leaning over it, you will ge glad you did.

I do have the nut loosely on it. I have now put the 50/50 ATF acetone on it. I have whacked it again and attempted to tighten it again. Is the patience part just leaving it alone for a while now, or do I patiently continue to whack it and tighten it?

Re: The dreaded flywheel.

try gently heating the flywheel, about an inch or so from the crankshaft, get it good and warm, but not hot enough for damage, put an icecube on the end of the crank for a couple of seconds, then whack your puller with a hammer. if that dont work......stick with bonairs suggestion!!!! lol

Re: The dreaded flywheel.

I had the same experience you are having. I heated the flywheel around the nut until the wheel was getting hot about 5" or so from the center. Then I dumped ice-water on it and it popped right off.

Re: The dreaded flywheel.

Well, I have tried every suggestion on here but the heat (my wife didn't see the humor in the nagging suggestion). Unless anyone has any other ideas, I am going to continue tapping on the flywheel with the rubber mallot, whacking the puller bolt with the BFH and trying to tighten the puller with the impact wrench, all the while soaking the end of the shaft in AFT and acetone for another day or two. Then if no success, I will put the heat to it. I hope a propane bottle will do it. I have no torch. I will post if I am successful. In the meantime, if anyone has any more suggestions, I am open for almost anything.

Re: The dreaded flywheel.

recently read this in a 1991 omc factory manual...wooden block on flywheel outer edge and strike the block with a hammer working around the flywheel's outer edge. I had a 9.9 "under tension" and didn't want to wait any longer..did this and it "popped" about the second time around the f/w..worth trying and the hammer offers some "relief"...fwiw..the block is struck from in a downward motion
