My boyfriend and I just bought a 14 ft Tracker Deep-V with a Mercury 25 EL 4 stroke EFI outboard. We ran it at Lake Mead, Nevada and it topped out at about 25 miles per hour. The next week we took it to 8500 ft and it would only go 15 mph. The dealer told us we should regear it but seeing as we will be running it at vastly different altitudes depending on the season I don't think that is a great idea. Can anyone give me suggestions? Also how do I find out how many rpms my motor is running at if the boat doesn't have a tachometer? Thanks for all your help.

You can get a tiny tach reasonable easy to install can be used on any similar motor without regard to stator poles. You will need a prop with less pitch (lower number)for higher altitudes. The size of your prop is on the barrel -- X -- Diameter X pitch.More later
