After tinkering for a few hours today, the engine is out. Pulled out really nice too - My hoist pulled it out w/o any problems at all. I just raised the bow and had tons of clearance.

Thanks to all who helped w/ their advice! Hopefully next weekend I can be installing the new engine and get back on the freakin' lake!:D:D:D

It was really not that bad, especially compared to a car!

Good job! It is amazing how easy it is to pull one considering the anxiety that comes before doing it. BTW, now is a great time to clean and paint your bilge!

Anyone care to elaborate on painting the bilge? I hadn't considered it, but it sounds like it wouldn't be that bad to do and certainly would be easier now... What specifically is needed? Special paint?

There are several marine paints that are self leveling, you just roll them on, then smooth with a brush(called tipping) and the little ridges will dissappear before it dries completely. Leave you with a nice shiney, smooth finish that is as durrable as gelcoat.

Would West Marine have such paints?

Hahaha.. I recently pulled my motor out for the first time too and was just as excited as you were.
I thought it was going to be one of the toughest things I would have to do..... Ended up being the easiest thing I have done.
I think I could pull my motor now in under 45 mins.:D

Re: The engine is OUT!!!! WOOT!!

Is that a standard height hoist? I have to pull my engine to replace the coupler but my transom is over 5' high when sitting on the trailer so a standard hoist won't work for me. Maybe I have to remove the tires and put the frame on blocks to get it low enough. Either that or move it down the driveway so the hoist is up higher (driveway is a slight slope) and get the nose of the boat as high as I can.

Did you pull it over the gunwale because of room to move around the boat or just to avoid the part of the deck that is above the engine? Mine doesn't have to come completely out of the boat so it may not be an issue but I definitely want to do it whatever way creates the least possibility of ruining the boat.

Thanks

Re: The engine is OUT!!!! WOOT!!

AFAIK, my hoist is a standard automotive style one; $250 at any local parts store.

I had it set on 1/2 ton, so it would extend as far as it could.

I lifted it and swung it over the side of the boat. I think the reason it went so well was the fact that the head and valve cover were off; ie. I could get the chains lower on the block because I didn't have the extra height of the cylinder head, etc.

Painted bilge. I used Interlux Brightsides. I sprayed it with an HVLP gun.

Dante,

Just wondering what kind of hoist did you use and the max height of it? My boat is of similar size(height) so I should be able to use a similar one....

Thanks!

Re: The engine is OUT!!!! WOOT!!

my boat sits too high on trailer to use an automotive hoist. harbor freight has some cheapies though.

i ended up using a friend's airplane hangar...i took the risers off first

Re: The engine is OUT!!!! WOOT!!

i just went through this same thing this past weekend. my transom sits close to 6' high. i ended up putting the hoist in the boat, then lifted the engine onto a microlam beam strung across the transom then backed my truck to the back of the boat as close as i could put the hoist in the truck and pulled the motor out.. got a few scratches on the dive deck but nothin to cry about..got a guys forklift to put it back in! haha

Re: The engine is OUT!!!! WOOT!!

The first time I pulled my engine I had a buddy stop by with his wrecker.. Then when the performance bug set in. I made a hoist for my old tractor. This works sweeeeeet !!! Takes ruffy 20-25 minutes to prep the motor for removing and just minutes to lift it now....
