the FEMA dance

anyone watching the kabooki show that has become FEMA? seems poor ole charlie brown does not want to rollover like a good dog.
but I was playing with the calculatorand, not including the debacle in arkensaw, its costing the US taxpayer about 3000 dollars a month to keep folks in a trailer.
dont know about your area but 3000 a month will get a nice place here.
I still say it would have been cheaper to give each head of household a check for 100K and a new american car and have them sign a waiver disallowing any further public assistance for 10 years.

this debacle will never end, or at least no chance of ending until the next administration.
and it will still be doubtful. I would not bet on it.

Re: the FEMA dance

I know what you mean rodbolt.
I was rolling down I- 40 west bound a few days ago and came upon 6 house trailers heading west bound and each across the back had FEMA on it and destination New Orleans.

Those houses weren't the cheap type either.
14X80's
For 3000 a month I would have let them have My house and I would have moved into my Travel Trailer

Re: the FEMA dance

I think I am with you on this one, rodbolt! I am not sure why I am forced to pay because someone chose to live in an area prone to hurricanes and yet had no insurance to cover it.

Don't get me wrong, I think we have a duty to help one another, and I have given donations, helped pack trucks with supplies, etc. But if I wasn't forced to give (taxes that the government reallocates), I would probably do much more to help. Seems the government knows best how to spend more and get less!

Re: the FEMA dance

Aspeck
we have that issue here, some folks chose to buy/build million dollar homes on the surf then cry when they get washed away. I say tough noogies.
my property is back away from the ocean and has been in my family since 1885, its never flooded. the house was built in 55 by my grandfather. the water has come within about 40 ft of it once. if I ever flood here most the outer banks will be seawater.
we just voted to repeal the "sand" tax here. it was a tax that only supported the rich ocean front property owners.
dare county commisioners passed it over the protests of hundreds, we collected enough signatures to force a referendum to repeal it.
out of the 30% of the registered votors that voted last week 70% voted to repeal it.
the 52 million the tax would have generated was not going to cover the US corp of engineers 100 billion estimate over the 50 year life of the progect, the US taxpayer was going to end up footing the bill for the wealthy beachfront business/property owners.
but by the time we pay all the fema admin costs, the storage costs and the intrst payments on all the trailers 100K and a new car to each displaced head of household will look very cheap indeed.

bubbakat
3k a month and Ill stay in my tent out back :) :) or move to venezuela and hang out a while :)

problem is its not gonna get anybetter until the current or next administration cuts heads and demands performance.
notice how when the debacle was placed under direct control of the USCG vice admiral things got moving rapidly?
thats how it should work.

Re: the FEMA dance

Not to mention that FEMA has taken over reposessed homes and is allowing these freeloaders to stay in them rent free for as much as 18 months. Imagine what those homes are going to be like when they get rid of them? (If they "CAN" get rid of them)!!!!!!!! Thats been the problem with some motel chains.

What do you want to bet that those people would have jobs and a place to live if they were left out in the cold, or at the most given cover and food for 30 days.??????????????????????????????

Re: the FEMA dance

bassin fever
thats the flip side of the problem, if a natural disater struck and my home was damaged or destroyed I dont expect the govt to take care of me forever nor find me a job.
I do expect that military helicopters and rescue equipment and personeel would be forthcoming and immediate aid to prevent further deaths but after that its not a govt responsibility unless the govt had a part in allowing the disater.
thats where the rub comes.
for at least 30 years "wackos" have predicted exactly what happened. odds are it will happen yet again.
I dont think its wise to build in an area 9ft below sealevel with no bedrock bottom. and its still sinking.
now would be a good chance to correct a mistake made 200 years ago
did anyone watch the weather channel show on if another hurricane the size of the 38 storm hits that area again?
it could make the NO look like a rainstorm.
I have my grandfathers log books from his USCG search team from that 38 storm. he was stationed at montauck point and after the storm had to go body collecting and each one is logged and noted.
if you think evacuating new orleans was tough try long island or new york city.
it aint gonna happen

Re: the FEMA dance

After Charley hit here neighbors were out helping each other clean up, cut, move, rebuild or whatever. Including getting supplies for those who couldn't. I dont know of anybody around here that EXPECTED the government to step in and do anything. We all signed our insurance forms for claims and registered with FEMA like we were asked to.

One day the FEMA guy showed up here and I filled out what he had. He asked a lot of questions about lost food, generators, hotel rentals (didnt ask for receipts but I had them), lost work etc. I never expected anything -- after all, there were those a lot worse off than we were. However, one day I did get a check that just about covered the cost of the generator. Cool!

Overall everybody continued to help each other. That storm brought out the best and worst of the community. I think the outside scum bags were the worst. I dont want to get started on those low lifes.

The point is, all we saw on TV after Katrina was people walking around N.O. looting and complaining. We'd see pictures of a dozen people walking down a street past a body. And no one made a move to cover up the poor guy or even move him. There were pictures of people in neighborhoods walking around and making no attempt to move debris or clean up anything to help get emergency vehicles on roads. Nothing!

I'm sure there were lots of folks who were helping. But all we saw were the ones complaning and wanting the government to come "save" them. Baloney!!

When this stuff happens you depend on one person. Yourself. We got our family squared away as best we could as quick as we could and then turned to help others. You do for yourself. If the government comes thru, then thats a bonus.

There were folks here that had nobody. FEMA put up the trailers and got folks in there that needed it. Monday the 13th will be 18 months and most of them in FEMA village have no plan or clue where they're going. Most havent even looked into it. FEMA said all they had to do to get an extension was to show proof they were trying to find a place. They still won't look.

Theres even a plan for assistance that the government will give them something like 50-60,000 to buy a house and if they live there something like 5 years, they don't have to pay it back. But they were upset because the money HAD to be spent on a house. It was a credit, not cash handed to them.

Most of the people in FEMA village were folks who could do for themselves but refused. Now the 18 months are up and they're screaming. I wish someone would give me 18 months of no house payment. Heck -- 18 weeks! 18 days!!!

The funny (sad) thing is there was so much crime in FEMA village that the cops put up a huge fence with razor wire all around the place. And armed guards at the entrance. Get this -- FEMA village is right next to the county jail / sheriff's office! Right next to it! And they still had more crime in there than anywhere else.

The other thing is that when I worked in New Orleans everybody there told me that yes, we're below seal level. Yes, we're below the lake level. And no, there is no plan in place in case a levy breaks. Let alone 3 breaking.

Its real hard for me to bring myself to blame everything on FEMA or the Feds when the locals didn't have a plan.

At least Bourbon Street finally got washed. I bet it still stinks though.

This is as was sent to me this am. Unknown sorce.no way to varify. Did Nagin say something i missed in the choclate speach or is someone just adding to it. I dont know. Im just passing it alongas I recieved it. Any input on this story?
HEYCODS

What I recieved is below;

Been wondering when this kind of thing would start....might even get the Mardi Gras moved back to Birmingham where it started (or was it Montgomery?)
Keep your Vanilla Butx out of Chocolate City
Did he ever stop to think that 99% of the people who come to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and pump money into their restaurants and hotels are VANILLA?
99% of the people who come to New Orleans for tourism and fill up their
restaurants and their hotels are VANILLA?
99% of the people who travel to New Orleans for large conventions and
utilize catering services, rental cars, hotels and visit Bourbon Street
and all tourist attractions are VANILLA?
99% of the money being pumped into the "Chocolate City's" economy is
coming from the pockets of VANILLA people?
Without the money brought into New Orleans by VANILLA people......where
would the "chocolate" city be?????
I say if Nagin wants his city to be all chocolate......then let's give
it to him..... Let's take our VANILLA money elsewhere..... We can
put our VANILLA money into Biloxi and Gulfport..... You never hear
those people complaining about the devastation they suffered during
Katrina......and you sure don't hear them calling their city
"chocolate."

So keep your VANILLA butx outa tha chocolate factory......lets see if
they can make it without our green dollars.....

Send this to every VANILLA person you know.......

Re: the FEMA dance

I am with ya DHadley. here I plan on maintaing myself and my neighbors for 3 days minimum and can do 5 with no worries.
much more than 5 and the beer rationing starts. the food may not be great but its livable. the water is ok,I have 2 hand pumps and a water purification system, smells a tad swampy but is healthy to drink. genset has 50 gallons or so set aside and I can usually find gas at the fish house tanks. after Fredrick hit mobile some of the FEMA trailers stayed for almost 5 years.
and yes crime in a fema villiage gets crazy, ill take my chances at home with a blue roof.
so far I have never needed nor wanted govt assistance, its usually more trouble than its worth.
mostly they stay away from me and I stay away from them and all are happy.

Dhadly, the New Orleans people are not representative of the rabble living in the Fema village that is near you.Nor is what you saw on tv representative of them
As always the right thing to do is not newsworthy, because IT DOES NOT SELL WHATEVER IS ADVERTIZED ON TV.News is about shocking people's awareness into paying attention to advertizement. It is not about left or right.

Re: the FEMA dance

I met a guy who is in an airboat club in N Fla who heard thet the folks in N. O. needed boats to come help them. This guy and his whole airboat club towed there at their own expense and offered to help. Most guys took time off from work.

They showed up, checked in at the appropriate prearranged place and were told by the cops that the area wasnt secure. It seems that someone (more than a few) was shooting at anyone trying to come in.

Once the cops had an area secure the plan was to stick a cop on an airboat and take supplies in and bring people out that were stranded and wanted to leave.

The guy said they waited all day and one boat went in, got shot at and and came out. The club took a vote and left the next day.

What the hell was that all about? Good folks trying to help and getting shot at???

The only folks shot around here were looters. Certainly not anyone trying to bring supplies in.
