Sounds like a real good test of JB Weld. Let us know if it works. They laughed at Robert Fulton's steamboat too.

Is there an interesting story that goes along with this question?

not uncommon for them to break off, if they had hydrofoils on them, and someone used it as a step. i would keep my eyes open for a donor lower unit.

Re: the fins on the lower unit

I am a huge fan of the JB but I don't think it will hold them unless you really put it on, like an inch overlap on either side of the break.

I have actually tried to rebuild the skeg with JB and it worked, for a short time, it just breaks again in the original spot.

We are talking about the horizontal cav plates or the skeg(fin on the bottom)??

As ondarvr ask, how did we break these off?

the ones that broke are the horizontile (spelling) ones. i bought the boat 2 years ago and one was already broke and the other one was cracked. our dog was running around in the back yard and his chain got caught in the cracked one and it broke off. i called a boat place and they said they could fix them but it would cost about $300 to do it. i didnt want to pay that much. so i think im going to try this. now my next ? is. if i did this is there a chance if or when they break off could it break the housing of the lower unit.

Agree, check around for a local weld shop, you should be able to get that done for $50-$100,maybe less.

If you do try the jb and it broke it would do it at the original break, no worries about breaking the main casing.
