Pontiac is bringing back the GTO this year. I hope they don;t screw up a legend.

http://www.pontiac.com/pontiacjsp/gto/launch/index.html?brand=home&pagename=home

Sports a 350 (5.7L) @ 350hp and 0 - 60 in 5 sec.

They should have been truer to the original nose IMHO

Believe it or not, I grew up in a '67 orchid convertible GTO my mother had - she loves fast cars. The first car she helped me buy was an early Buick Grand National 3.8 Turbo :D I had that while she was driving around in a sleeper Comaro IROC (all the mechanicals and none of the plastic)

I know what you mean! Rear end looks like a Honda! I dunno - I think they may have screwed it up in the looks department. Also it is going to cost between $30K - $35K...

sorry guys, that looks almost as bad as that nova bodied thing they tried to pass off as a GTO back in the 70's. there will never be a replacement for the real GTO and its 389 with 3 deuces on top.

I agree with everyone on the looks. But, lets look at the bright side, 6 speed manual, legit v-8 (no wanna-be super charged 240 horse V-6) and "Rear" wheel drive. This is the begining of the end of GM's marrage to FWD. It an't perfect but it is a step in the right direction.
Thank God.

Re: The GTO is Back!

yea, it's a glorified Grand Am. Hopefully there will be enough tweeks in the engine and suspension that it will live up to its name sake. They (Pontiac) have been toying with the GTO name plate for years, promising us a Goat in either the G/A or G/P platform. They finally decided on the G/A (I think the Grand Prix would have been better). Now we will see if the engineering department lived up to what it said it would do and if the marketing department can do the job. Till then I will stick with my '76 50th Anniversary T/A (you know, the original Smokey and the Bandit mobile).

Re: The GTO is Back!

If my memory serves me correctly,it's actually being built off a Holden platform. Which is a GM affiliate in Australia. My recollections of this vehicle might be a little off as I haven't worked in that industry in about a year. However, with Bob Lutz running a number of the projects for GM the rear wheel drive car is going to continue to be a part of their platforms. For instance the CTS and XLR are both rear drive.
