Yea, we've got those out here too. They depend on the rest of society to feed them :p

Man, those geese are so thick around the RI coast you can't go anywhere outside without seeing at least a few dozen. They are EVERYWHERE in droves, and most never even migrate.
Does anyone know if the Canadian Geese are still considered an endangered species? I know that around here if you kill one you'll likely do more time than for murder. They sure look tasty, though.

Still hunt them here in the west (Pacific fly zone) With the help of organization like Ducks unlimited the population of most ducks and geese here has increased since the mid seventies

Yep, we can take them here now also. They have made a huge comeback, I remember as a kid if you saw a flock it was pretty amazing. Now, I see at least two flocks a day flying over (once the ice is out!).

Yeah, they like the water for some reason  As soon as a hole opens up in a pond you'll see thousands of them standing around it.

If they migrate south for the winter, and the winter is so long in Canada, why do they call them Canadian geese? Shouldn't they be called something like Carolina honkers or something

along the atlantic coast the "canadian" geese seem to stay around, snow or no snow. the ducks are that way too. I'm talking lat. 40 deg or so. i think they have had so many generations like this that they no longer have the instinct to fly either north or south. they've been urbanized.

We have lots of resident geese in Maryland. I saw a flock flying north last weekend that was at least 500 to 1000 strong. It was fun watching them form up & shift positions as they flew past.It went on for a good 15 minutes.

How do they decide who is lead goose though?
That always amazed me.

I think they take turns leading, kinda like drafting in racing. Once the lead goose gets tuckered, he falls back into formation and let's another goose take the lead. The geese in the rear of the formation don't have to break as much wind as the lead goose. :D
