I am told that my "new" boat should be outfitted with an OB with a short shaft. Can someone please help me with the specifics. Is that 20"? How would I measure a motor, transome to prop?

Thanks,

Dennis

Re: The Shaft

Dpropson..... Measure the transom at the centerline, from the top (where the engine would sit) to the bottom (keel) of the boat.

The measurement may not be exact but it would be within 1/2" to 3/4".

15" would be short shaft

20" would be long shaft

25" would be extra long shaft.

You would measure the engine from the rest area of the transom bracket (the bracket that clamps to the boat... the part that would sit on top of the transom) to the cavitation plate (the plate just above the prop), then subtract 1". That will bring the measurement close to one of the figures mentioned above.

When the engine is installed on the boat, you would want that cavitation plate to be approximately 1/2" to 3/4" below the bottom of the boat at the center of the transom.
