the smell of rubber

I have a 1990 mercruiser I/O and I was running it for most of the day then all of a sudden I started to kinda smell rubber and just thought maybe I had a loose belt. After about 100 yards or so it loudly sounded like a belt broke and stopped driving with a very harsh smell of rubber, so I shut it off and looked around saw nothing so started it and it went into gear and reverse but could only move at idle speed. Sorry my question is so long:( Any thoughts on what it might be?

engine coupler destroyed

if you run the engine in gear at above idle rpm, check the driveshaft to see if it is spinning

otherwise, if the boat is out of the water, pull the drive and inspect the coupler splines

X2 on the coupler. which if is indeed the case, will mean pulling the engine to replace it.

Yep on the coupler.... BUT... The splines will probably be fine. So there's no need to check them. It's the rubber part that has slipped/ been destroyed. Not the metal splines.

Unfortunately, to change the coupler, you probably have to pull the engine. You need to haul the boat and pull the drive. On some boats (very few), there's enough room to disconnect the engine and slide it forward. Then you can pull the bell housing and the coupler. On most boats, there's no room, so the engine must come out. Hy

Is there another name for that part? How should I look that up in my Seloc repair manual?

What engine do you have. 1990 Mercruiser doesn't mean much.

It is typically called a coupler or hub. Forget the Seloc manual. If you go to the sticky at the top of the page you can download - or at least access the original Mercruiser manual.
