First off i really wouldnt recommend putting a wrench on your starter and then hitting start. That would only end in disaster. I had this same problem on mine there a washer that sits right under the nut stops the bendix from jumping up to the nut and holds the spring since the bendix never touches this part i used a pair of vice grips to grab it right there.

well throwing a wrench on it and starting it def not a better way ;p. my older starter had a part at the bottom of the shaft i could grab with channel locks but the newer starter i got didnt have this option vice grips worked for me.

I haven't had to change this part yet, but it is in my future. How about a strap wrench around the pinon gear to hold it?

Why not just pull the starter apart? . The shaft that the gear is on is part of an armature that spins inside the casing...because it's all more or less one piece, just hold onto it with your hand and tighten the nut as you would any other nut. leave everything in the bottom and pull part 10 and everything on it straight up. See part 10 on the attached photo. BTW, that is a diagram of the starter on a 1980 35hp johnson. Model # J35ELCSM

thanks for the help, my experiance with getting the brushes back around the armature is that if i can avoid it, i will. guess i will try the vise grips. just joking about running it with a wrench..
