Thermostat Gasket?

Looking at the Seloc manual it shows a gasket for my Evinrude 18hp 1959 - 15028. The thermostat kit doesnt contain one and there wasnt one originally. Does this need a gasket (not the thermostat flange, the piece that bolts to the head) and can I just use the permatex stuff if so?

It requires a gasket between the plate and the cylinder head.

Chris, this was the case when I replaced my thermostat with a kit....."What, no gasket????". I went to the local auto part store and bought a sheet of gasket material, traced the housing and bolt holes, and cut it with a razor blade. Worked great.

Re: Thermostat Gasket?

That might be the best option. I had the part # 308328 called the local dealer and was completely surprised when they said they had it - looked ok. I get the thing home and it is nowhere near what I need - the inside part lines up, the holes were all goofy, tried to trim it out and no way is that thing gonna work. Looks almost like it is backwards if that makes sense.

Sierra should include these in their "thermostat kits", I figured the thing would come with it - thats what you get for assumptions I guess.

Re: Thermostat Gasket?

question for those that might know this. There is a small hole on the side of the thermostat, looks like some sort of bypass - does the gasket cover this hole?
