I finally got the thermostat out after having to drill out one of the bolts that had rusted to the housing. I bought a new thermostat here on iboats, Sierra 18-3668. The new gaskets include a rubber O-ring. I didn't have one from the old thermostat. It looks like I only need the 2 gaskets next to the thermostat and the one directly below the thermostat that are in the pic. If I need the rubber O-ring where does it go?

Hi there, First you install the new thermostat into the housing then you put the brown cork type gasket on top of the thermostat then the gaskets making sure you do not coat the brass rivets with any sealant if you have any type of sensors going into the housing.

If you look at the thermostat you can barely see remnants of the cork gasket item number 6,

That makes sense and is what I was thinking. All I use is #4,6,8. The rubber O-ring and the closed gasket are not for my use.
Any idea why the diagram shows the brass sleeve, #7, on top of the thermostat when the thermostat sits inside that sleeve?
You also answered another question I was thinking about. I can/should use gasket sealant as I don't have any sensors in that area.
