thermostat installation order

i have a 1985 evinrude 90hp which i'm replacing the tstat.the problem is my manual seems to be different from the way i took the old stat out.so i'm seeing if the cork gasket that goes on the stat itself is suppose to be on the front of the stat or on the back of the stat.the front being towards me standing facing the motor or the back which would be closes to the motor.
so is it (working my way out)gasket,thermostat or thermostat gasket then valve cover or vise versa

The thermostat points back (long section) toward the back of the engine. The gasket goes between the engine and the top of the thermostat.

the gasket that goes between is it the round gasket or is it the the long black gasket that would be between the motor and the valve body cover ?
