I have a 2003 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-D engine that is raw water cooled. I am replacing the thermostat with the part listed in the attached link.

My question has to do with the way the thermostat seems to sit within the thermostat housing. With the housing off, it looks like the T-stat sits up in the top portion of the housing, below the raw water feed and exhaust manifold outlets, but above the water pump recirc hose. The only thing that holds the T-stat in place is a rubber O-ring. This seems odd as it looks like th T-stat could just fall into the top of the engine where the housing is bolted as the engine circulation opening is larger than the thermostat.

I am just looking for confirmation that this is t-stat position correct. Thanks for any insights from anyone who has worked on the this model.

Hi,
Yep it is right I have the same set up. Just make sure the bypass is clear.
this is a small hole about 1/16 to an 1/8 inch you might have to poke around to find it.

Yes...the O ring does all the work to keep it up there, hopefully you got a new O ring and gasket with the t-stat?

Bob,

Yes, I did use a new o-ring and replaced the gasket on the T-stat housing. It just seems odd that the O-ring is the only thing holding the T-stat from dropping out of the housing. I would think there would be a reasonable amount of pressure exerted fromthe raw water feed on the top of the thermostat.

It looks like on top of the engine where the housing is mounted there is an indentation for a thermostat to fit, I expect this may be where it sits if you have a fresh water system.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have the same set-up on my OMC, in fact for some years they used the exact same thermo housing. The rubber ring works just fine, I pry it out with a little screwdriver pop the new one in and that's it. I do put a coating of OMC gasket sealer on the gasket and the bolts that hold the housing on, that seals well and keeps the bolts from rusting in place.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to update this answer. I have a Volvo Penta 5.0 and needed to replace the thermostat. These thermostats are not just held in by the rubber gasket but by a metal ring. This metal ring can be a pain to get out but it will make installing the new thermostat much easier. Here are some pics. I hope this helps.
