I found that there is no thermostat in my 89' 30hp suzuki, I know the motor has been worked on cause it was moddified previously. Do I actually need one, what exactly is the job of the thermostat (the one in the top of the cylinder head) all the sensors and warnings have been bypassed, hence it was a moddified engine, so I'm not interested in connecting it all again, if it blows up it blows up ..... can anyone please explain what exactly my engine needs the thermostat for, so I can decide if i'll put one in or not.

Re: Thermostat missing?

Any engine that comes equipped with a thermostat has one to run at an optimal temperature, like your car does. The thermostat regulates how much water is passing through the cooling passges. Your engine probably is not running as warm as it was designed to do, but if it still runs, and your happy with it, run it, if it blows you can buy a bigger motor.

The manufacturer would not have gone through the trouble of fitting the engine with a thermostat if it wasn't needed. Ever hear of "cold siezure"? Thats when the pistons expand quicker than the cylinders because there is no thermostat to cause the engine to heat up at the required rate. Idle quality and overall performance can also be affected.
