thermostat question - this is strange!

On my 88 hp Johnson (1993) I decided to change the thermostats out . After taking the thermostat cover off I found NOTHING under it, no thermostats, springs, gaskets, etc. - just the valve body. Crazy thing is I've been running the boat for 1.5 years with no major problems . Is anyone aware if there is any reason a mechanic would remove all those parts? (it was a used motor when I got it). Also, on the installation of the new ones my exploded drawing wasn't that clear so I had another question . If you are facing the back of the motor , is the correct way to install the new thermos with the plunger portion (that opens) towards the cylinders - thats what it looked like - just wondering. Thanks for any help.

If memory serves me right...the top of the thermostat..points INTO the engine. The original owner my have come from a part of the country that is real hot. Sometimes they will remove the thermostat and poppet valves to help the engine run cooler.

TMD

The Doctor is correct. Any true marine wrench will tell you that you shorten the life of these motors when you run without thermostats & poppet valves - these motors are designed to run with them.

On the installation sequence - I would suggest that you check with someone who has the OMC manual for your motor - check the reference section in your library even.
