Can anyone tell me what thermostat should be in a 1986 Alpha, 260? And is there anything I should know or look for during the process of changing it?

Thanks,
Ron

salt water will give you problems in long term use with a thermostat rated over 143 or so. fresh water will let you run a much higher number. I like the 170 or 180 in fresh water. some people like to drill a small hole so the housing does not airlock.

Re: Thermostat question

That engine probably came with a 120, but a 140 would be fine today. A 160 would be a good choice if you are in fresh water.

Tips: Pay attention to how it comes apart, including all the hoses attached.
Clean the surface well, in order to apply a new gasket.
Don't break the plastic sleeve inside the thermostat housing.
Don't use "gorilla torque" when putting the housing back on.
