I have a 98' Merc 25hp, 2-stroke and I am thinking of removing the thermostat all together. I know it will keep the engine from reaching the rec. temp but besides that, would it really cause any problems in the long term? Any insight on this or thoughts / experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Thermostat Removal

Why do you want to remove it? It will cause the motor to run cold and run inefficiently. There will not be any other side effects of consequence.

Re: Thermostat Removal

Thanks, it's pretty much ran in warm weather, and I guess I like the thought of not having that thing stick closed and causing overheat damage. I took it out this morning and it was on it's last leg anyway, but on the flip side the boat it at the shop having the other half of the bolts removed that broke off in the powerhead. Mercury really should invest in anti-sieze grease on everything. If anyone else is reading this, beware....this is the second merc 25hp I own and I love both of them, one is a 89' and one is a 98' (same engine), but...if you are removing bolts in the powerhead, have a drill, bolt removal tool and a new bolt handy...your going to need it.
