Local engine shop removed the thermostat from my 9.9 johnson, said the engine would run better and cooler without it. I have concerns as if this was the case the thermostat wouldn't be needed in the first place. Welcome comments about this issue.

Gary

Re: Thermostat removed

Mechanics in this area tend not to replace the thermostats in small outboards, either. I've had several that have run for years with no apparent ill effect. I don't believe I'd do it on a large outboard because of the extreme temperature differential between hot powerhead and cold water. May lead to warping. Of course, ambient water temperature down here is a lot higher, too.

Cold engine = high wear
Approx. 85% of engine wear occurs while warming up. If you want to wear it out fast, keep it cool... :(

Schematic is probably right. I use my small motors as auxiliaries and don't put many hours on them. As you said, the designers put them in there for a reason. I've been to Halifax several times and love the area [don't know how much I'd love it in winter. though].
