I have a 1972 short shaft 18 hp evinrude. Should it have a thermostat? Does it require one to run well if it needs one?

Also it smokes. I assume that its because it hasn't been run in ten years. Just did new seals plugs and water pump.

Re: thermostat?

It is supposed to have a thermostat in the top of the cylinder head. It will run without it, but it will run better and longer with it. It is SUPPOSED to smoke. You did put oil in the gas, y'know. When oil burns, it smokes. Mix is supposed to be 50:1. One pint of outboard oil to 6 gallons of regular gas.

Re: thermostat?

Check shop.evinrude.com and look up your motor. You'll see where it's at and the part #.
