Re: Thermostats WHY ???
Thermostats are designed to bring an engine up to opperating temp at a controlled rate. Once the opperating temp is correct the T-stat will keep it at the proper opperating temp. If the T-stat is removed or not closing properly, the engine will run too cool. If the engine is running too cool... the metal parts (pistons, cylinder walls, head etc.) have not expanded to their proper opperating deminsions and the engine will wear out very quickly. Starting an engine is the single bigest cause of wear over the life of the engine, cars and boats alike. Without a thermostat, it's like running the engine in start up mode all the time. Death will come soon. As far as salt water goes... Flush the engine better and keep a supply of T-stats arround, their cheap.
