Friday night around 12:30 I noticed a suv stop in front of my house. I got up and looked out the front doors window to see some guy running away from my house with something in his hands. I then opened the door and yelled as loud as I could.. "HEY MUTHAFAULKERS,, WHAT ARE YOU MFS DOING"? "I HAVE A GUN". The guy dropped something and quickly got into the suv while another guy inside was saying "don't leave it" They quickly sped away . I then got my loaded shotgun and walked to the street to see my wifes cement yard duck laying on the curb .I assume it was just some teens out trying to have some fun. I dont find coming on to someones private property late at night to steal very funny. I only wish I would have had the shot gun with me when I opened the door and I might have got to have peppered the side of that big new suv with 410 shotgun pellets.....Explaining the thousands of dollars in damage to the dad who owed it would be hard..

You are supposed to fire through your front door.

Glad the duck didn't get his feathers ruffled.

Re: they tried to steal my wifes duck

Sounds a little like a story that was told to me by a guy I used to work for. He had a new baby, and late one night (closer to early next day) he was up feeding the baby. As he looked out the living room window he noticed the passenger door of his car open. He took the baby in to his wife while he sneaked out the back door. He then walked up to the car and noticed a pair of legs sticking out from under the door.

Marty was a decent sized guy and used all of his height and weight to kick the door shut on the guys legs. The he grabbed the guy and told him don't even think of running because I know you can barely walk let alone run. Dragged the guy into his kitchen and called the cops. When he got hold of them he told them that he just got some guy breaking into his car, and was defending his property so who knows what kind of treatment the thief was going to get.

It took only a few minutes for the cops to get there.

Or there was a story in the Edmonton Journal newspaper a couple of years ago. Somebody stole a quad from a farmer out in Alberta. The farmer noticed it happening and chased the guy. Being a typical Alberta farmer there is always a gun nearby. The farmer was chasing he guy who stole he quad in his pickup truck. When the thief turned off and went through a field the farmer pulled the gun and shot at the thief. I believe he farmer hit but didn't kill the thief.

The farmer was charged with attempted murder. I did't hear the outcome of the court case but I do know there was a lot of support for the farmer for defending his property. Below is a link to a newspaper update.

Re: they tried to steal my wifes duck

many years ago I lived in a not so great neighborhood. Had a guy stop by to "admire" my 68 mustang. he then says "be careful out here people might try to steal it". I said i wasn't worried, i had a few guns and a good dog. that night the dog is going crazy, look out the window and sure enough, see the door open on the car as someone is trying to hot wire it. opened the door and let the dog go. this is an almost 100 lb pit bull. I never would have thought a human could outrun him but he did. not sure if it was the guy who stopped by or not, don't care, never seen him again. No one ever messed with the cars again either. LOL

Why steal a concrete duck? As much as it would have felt great to pepper the SUV it would be highly questionable legally!

I think if my wife had a concrete duck in the front yard, I would probably hire someone to steal it.

Re: they tried to steal my wifes duck

when i was much younger i used to mow a guys lawn once a week, he had about 10-15 concrete squirrels that he hand painted and each one had its place beside a shrub/tree. about once a month, the one in the corner closest to the street would be gone. he tried to stay up on certain nights to catch the perp...but never had any luck. he would rant and rave about these missing ornaments. one saturday i came over to mow, and he met me with a single sneaker in hand, laughing to the point of tears. he then...with much effort...due to uncontrolled laughing, told me what he did. under the squirrel that always went missing, he buried a cinder block with about 15 feet of clothesline cable tied to it, and bolted the other end to the bottom of the squirrel. got up that saturday morning a 5am only to see the cable ran out to full length and a lone sneaker laying in his driveway!! i can just imagine how the thief felt when that cable came tight!!

I have to agree with 1973Chieftain, SUV is sitting on the road "public" property. Shoot the kids and drag them back onto your lawn if you have to. I really don't like to see people hurt, but messing with another man's property is a lesson the some people need to learn.

And maybe you can take out the duck in the process. "Sorry Honey, but it got in the way..."

Several years ago I caught a guy in broad daylight walking off with my gasoline can. He ran to his car and sped away as I got his tag number. The cops lied and said the car was stolen and they couldnt even give me the name of the owner.. I had a cop friend in another county run the tag and THE CAR WAS NOT REPORTED STOLEN ..This is why I have the attitude I do and WILL for sure use the shot gun if given the chance.

I hate thieves, but you need to check the laws in your state concerning the use of deadly force. The laws concerning brandishing a fire arm and/or firing it at or near people for any reason. We have the "Castle" law. Still, I don't think you can legally shoot at someone running away from you or someone who is just in your yard unless you feel your life is in danger and you can't flee. They have to cross the threshold of your home otherwise. Once they come through a door or window then BOOM! :D
Check the laws. You don't want to be the one going to jail

as far as I know it is never legal to shoot someone in the back no matter what they may have stolen/done. When they are facing away from you, you are no longer in danger......theoretically. Another words if you're gonna do it yell first so they turn around and look at you. LOL

Re: they tried to steal my wifes duck

I made my wife a small wodden wishing well this past summer. It was not the greatest looking thing in the world but she said she wanted one so I oblidged. She put it out on our front porch the evening I gave it to her. That thing didn't last 36 hours. Some idiot had the nerve to walk up on our porch and steal it .Like I said, it wasn't the best thing in the world, and it didn't cost me anything to make (everything came from my scrap pile) but I'd sure like to get my hands on whoever stole it. I can't stand a thief.

Re: they tried to steal my wifes duck

My story isn't theft, but vandalism...

Every Saturday morning I would go out to the roadside mailbox to get the morning paper and find the red flag bent down. Naturally, I bent it back up. My observation was that every mailbox on the street was the same way. After a few weeks the metal flag had been bent so many times that I knew it would break off after a few more times.

I had a chemical at work that smelled like a cross between ammonia and dog / cat / horse / cow poop. I mixed a good bit of it with axle grease and smeared it on the back of the flag.

Next Saturday as I walked to the mailbox I noted that all the flags up the street were bent and none down the street were. Mine was only half bent. Next to my mailbox on the ground was a bunch of my special grease that had been wiped off on the grass, right next to a big pile of barf!

The kid never came back!
